Tartu City Government

Tartu is the education and science capital of Estonia. With around 100 000 citizens it's the second largest city in Estonia. 'due to high number of students the average age in Tartu is just under 40 years old. Tartu is situated on the banks of Estonia's largest river The Mother River. The city has a round shape and is realively flat witch makes it good for walking and cycling.

Pilot area: Vaksali and Central Areas

The city is devided into three sections by the river and the railway. Pilot area is situated between the railroad and the river includeng the central area and the heart of Tartu together with the bus station and the railway station but also schools, kindergartens, shoping malls, theaters and cinemas. The pilot area is the main destination for all travels inside the city. Mobility research has shown an increase in private car use due to urban sprawl and it can be felt in the pilot area. The objective to join the cities.multimodal project for Tartu is to reduce private care use in the city and in the pilot area, making the area more pedestrian and cyclist friendly and safe.
